This summer, I had the pleasure of exploring the beautiful country of Panama. Central America has been popping up on travelers' radars lately, and for good reason. With easy access from the U.S. and reasonable pricing, it’s an ideal destination for a quick escape. After several clients asked about Panama, I knew it was time to check out this stunning location myself. Over the July 4th weekend, a friend and I packed our bags for a whirlwind trip, eager to experience Panama’s charm, luxury, and vibrant culture.

Although our trip was brief, we managed to get a fantastic glimpse of what Panama has to offer. Here's a look at where we stayed, what we explored, and why Panama deserves a spot on your travel list.

Where to Stay

Luxury in the City: Bristol Panama

Panama offers a range of accommodations for every type of traveler. For our first night, we stayed at Bristol Panama,* a luxurious hotel located in the financial district. From the moment we walked in, it felt like an oasis in the middle of the bustling city. The lobby was elegant, the rooms were spacious and modern, and there are amazing works of art everywhere you turn. It’s the kind of place where you feel pampered from the moment you arrive. Whether you're in Panama City for business or just enjoy being close to the action, the Bristol is the perfect place to stay.

The View From Our Room at Sofitel Casco Viejo

Historical Elegance: Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo

For a completely different experience, we moved to the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo. Nestled in the heart of the historic district, this hotel was a dream. The combination of colonial architecture with modern luxury felt like a seamless blend of old and new.

Our room had stunning views of both the water and the city—a room with this view is a must. The location made it the perfect base for exploring Casco Viejo. This hotel is ideal for couples, history buffs, or anyone looking for a touch of elegance with a view.

A Relaxing Escape: Ordovician Beach Resort

Before heading home, we ventured out of the city to Ordovician Beach Resort, located on Panama’s Caribbean coast. This resort was a hidden gem—quiet, peaceful, and surrounded by the natural beauty of the coast. It was the perfect place to recharge after the city’s energy. Whether you’re looking to lounge on the beach or enjoy coastal views, this boutique resort offers a tranquil escape from Panama City’s urban buzz.

Panama Viejo: Where It All Began

Our historical journey started at Panama Viejo, the site of the original settlement and the birthplace of Panama. Walking through the sprawling grounds, you could almost imagine the early days of the colony. The ruins stand as silent witnesses to the city’s founding, and the Panama Viejo Museum helps bring the story to life with its well-curated exhibits. I highly recommend starting your historical exploration here before moving on to Casco Viejo. It offers the perfect introduction to Panama’s rich past.

Casco Viejo

We spent an entire day exploring Casco Viejo, Panama City’s historic district, through the Legends of Casco Viejo tour, and it was one of the best decisions we made. Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly passionate, sharing personal stories alongside historical facts as we wandered through the cobblestone streets. The beautifully restored buildings stand side by side with crumbling facades, telling the story of a resilient city that continues to go on. Casco Viejo felt like stepping into a different time. If you’re a history lover, this tour is an absolute must.

Private Boat Tour with Ordovician Beach Resort

One of the highlights of our stay at Ordovician Beach Resort was the private boat tour arranged by the resort’s exceptional staff. This exclusive experience allowed us to explore Panama’s stunning Caribbean coastline from a new perspective. The boat tour took us to secluded beaches and hidden coves, far from the typical tourist trails. The knowledgeable crew shared fascinating insights about the region’s marine life and coastal landscapes, making the tour both relaxing and informative. Whether you’re interested in enjoying the serene beauty of the coast or simply basking in the views, this personalized boat tour is a must for anyone seeking a more intimate and luxurious way to experience Panama’s natural beauty.

The Panama Canal

While we didn’t get the chance to visit the Panama Canal, it’s something every traveler should consider. One thing to note: ships don’t pass through continuously. The Miraflores Locks operate on a schedule, so be sure to check it in advance if you want to catch the action. Even though we skipped it this time, the Canal remains a highlight for any Panama adventure. There are several options when it comes to booking tours. The Incredible Food

Panama’s food scene is nothing short of extraordinary, blending local flavors with international influences. From elegant dining rooms with panoramic views to creative, laid-back eateries, we indulged in some of the best meals we’ve ever had. At Azahar, the seafood took center stage, with their ceviche being a must-try. The dishes struck the perfect balance between local ingredients and refined international flair. Meanwhile, Mai Mai delivered bold fusion flavors, combining the essence of Panama with global techniques in every dish.

At Ordovician Beach Resort, the resort’s chef crafted exceptional meals that showcased Panama’s finest local ingredients with gourmet precision. The lobster I had was easily one of the best I’ve ever tasted. The resort’s culinary program is inspired and led by one of the owners, whose passion for both exquisite food and hosting guests shines through every meal, breakfast to dinner.

Whether you’re dining in the city or at a coastal retreat, Panama’s culinary scene is vibrant, diverse, and unforgettable.

Panama Gems We Didn’t Get to See (But You Should!)

Though we didn’t have time to explore everything, we learned about some stunning boutique hotels nestled in Panama’s mountains. These spots offer breathtaking scenery, lush rainforests, and charming experiences. If you’re an adventure seeker or a nature lover, these mountain retreats should definitely be on your list.
